The city as a fortress

The casemates in Wiener Neustadt are unique in Austria due to their excellent preservation and are listed buildings under monumental protection. Going back to the 12th century, the Kasematten represents the development of the city fortifications, which grew steadily throughout the centuries. After a centuries-long slumber, the ensemble built as a weapons and ammunition depot was extensively renovated for the Lower Austrian State Exhibition 2019. In addition to being the only “Strada Coperta” preserved in Austria, parts of the city wall (with a spike-laid masonry - the „Opus Spicatum“), the Zwinger wall, as well as the historic “Kasematten” and the old bastion are open to visitors.
